Jason Everman: From Soundgarden to Nirvana to Army Ranger

Jason Everman’s life journey is nothing short of remarkable. From his early days as a musician in renowned bands like Soundgarden and Nirvana to his later career as an Army Ranger, Everman’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and unwavering determination. In this blog post, we will delve into the life of Jason Everman. Tracing his path from the music industry to the military, and referencing interviews, including his recent appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, to shed light on his fascinating journey.

Early Years and Music Career

Jason Everman was born in Alaska in 1967 and grew up in Washington state. In the late 1980s, Everman was an active part of the local music community and had already established himself as a talented guitarist. He was known for his unique style and passion for music.

Through his connections in the Seattle music scene, Everman was introduced to the members of Soundgarden, who were also rising stars in the grunge movement. Soundgarden, led by frontman Chris Cornell, was looking for a second guitarist to join their band and complement their heavy, guitar-driven sound. Impressed by Everman’s skills, Soundgarden invited him to join the band. He graciously accepted the offer.

Everman’s addition to Soundgarden brought a new dynamic to the band’s music, and he played a significant role in the recording of their debut album “Ultramega OK,” which was released in 1988. However, his time with Soundgarden was short-lived, and he left the band before their breakthrough album “Louder Than Love” was released in 1989, due to creative differences (so clique in my opinion).

Jason Everman’s entry into Nirvana can be traced back to his connection with Soundgarden. After leaving, Everman continued to be involved in the Seattle music scene and established himself as a talented, well-known guitarist. In 1989, Nirvana was looking for a second guitarist for their upcoming tour in support of their debut album “Bleach.” Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil, who was also friends with Everman, recommended him to the band.

Impressed by his guitar skills and experience with Soundgarden, Nirvana’s frontman Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic invited Everman to join them on tour as their second guitarist. Everman accepted the offer and joined Nirvana for their 1989 tour, playing an essential role in their live performances during that time.

However, Everman’s time with Nirvana was short-lived as well. He left the band after the tour due to creative differences and personal reasons (once again very clique). Despite his brief tenure with Nirvana, Everman’s contribution to the band’s early live performances helped solidify his reputation as a skilled guitarist and furthered his music career.

Here is a video of the members of Nirvana talking about Everman’s departure (it does not exactly paint him in the best light but I always find these videos interesting).

Transition to the Military

Despite his success in the music industry, Everman felt a calling to serve his country and made a surprising decision to join the United States Army in 1994. His decision to enlist in the military was unexpected, and it marked a significant shift in his life’s trajectory. Everman’s military journey began with his completion of basic training, after which he went on to become an Army Ranger.

As an Army Ranger, Everman underwent rigorous instruction, including airborne school, and served in various roles, including as a sniper and a team leader. His military service took him to different parts of the world, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he displayed exceptional courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

Lessons Learned and Insights

Everman’s experiences in the military profoundly impacted his life, and he has shared valuable insights and lessons learned from his time as an Army Ranger in various interviews, including his recent appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast. In these interviews, Everman has spoken about the importance of discipline, perseverance, and mental toughness, which he developed through his military training. He has also highlighted the bonds of brotherhood and camaraderie that are formed among soldiers and the profound impact that serving in the military can have on one’s character and outlook on life.

Everman has also spoken about the challenges he faced during his military career, including dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the difficulties of transitioning from military life to civilian life. He has been candid about his struggles and has used his experiences to raise awareness about mental health issues faced by veterans and the need for better support and resources for those who have served in the military.

Connection Between Music and Military

While Jason Everman’s experiences in the military and his time with Soundgarden and Nirvana may seem disparate on the surface, there are some connections that he has referenced about his life journey.

One notable connection Everman has discussed is the importance of discipline and teamwork. In the military, he underwent rigorous training that instilled in him a strong sense of discipline, and he learned the value of working closely with a team to achieve a common goal. These qualities were also important in his music career, as being part of a successful band like Soundgarden or Nirvana required collaboration, coordination, and a strong work ethic.

Additionally, Everman has spoken about the challenges he faced in both the military and the music industry, and how overcoming those challenges required mental toughness and resilience. In interviews, he has mentioned that the mental strength he developed in the military helped him navigate the ups and downs of the music industry and vice versa.

Jason Everman’s journey from Soundgarden to Nirvana to Army Ranger is a testament to his resilience, courage, and unwavering determination. His transition from a successful music career to serving in the military was a surprising and unconventional choice.
